If you have been shopping for a pickup truck lately around Ephrata or anywhere in the Lancaster area, you already know the struggle. Finding something that is actually reliable, looks good, and doesn't break the bank is getting tougher by the day. Prices for new trucks are pushing $70,000, which makes the used market more competitive than ever.
I wanted to take a look at what I consider the absolute best value sitting on a lot right now if you are trying to stay under that $25,000 mark. Specifically, we are looking at a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT with the 3.5L EcoBoost. This particular one has 99,000 miles on it, and there are some very specific reasons why this is the "sweet spot" for your wallet and your peace of mind.
Why the 2018 F-150 is the Budget King
The F-150 is the most popular truck on the road for a reason. Ford sells more of these than anyone else, and that actually works in your favor as a used buyer. Because there are so many of them out there, supply and demand help keep the pricing more grounded than some rare trim levels or less common brands.
One of the biggest perks of the 2018 model year is the aluminum body. Ford made the switch to aluminum back in 2015, which was a game changer for those of us living in Pennsylvania where the road salt eats steel for breakfast. When you buy an eight-year-old truck in this area, you usually expect to see some bubbling on the wheel wells or cab corners. With this truck, you don't have to worry about body rust. You still need to keep an eye on the steel frame, but the body itself stays looking fresh for years.
The 100,000 Mile Financing Hurdle
There is a bit of a secret in the car world about that 100,000-mile marker. I always tell people that if you're going to trade a truck in, do it before it hits six digits, or plan to drive it into the ground. Once a truck crosses 100,000 miles, its trade value takes a hit, and more importantly, it becomes much harder to finance.
Since this truck is sitting right at 99,000 miles, most banks and credit unions will still treat it as a financeable vehicle with decent terms. If it had 101,000 miles, someone with a credit score below 700 might really struggle to get an approval. Being under that cap means I can get more people into a quality truck with a payment they can actually afford.
Performance and Capability Without the New Truck Price
Under the hood of this F-150 is the 3.5L EcoBoost engine. By 2018, Ford had worked out a lot of the kinks from the earlier versions of this motor. It is a tried-and-true powerhouse that gives you plenty of towing capacity without the terrible fuel mileage of an old-school V8.
-
Towing: This specific setup can pull up to 10,700 pounds. Whether you’re hauling a camper to the mountains or a boat to the bay, it’s no lightweight.
-
Fuel Economy: You’re looking at about 17 mpg in the city and up to 23 mpg on the highway.
-
Features: This is the XLT with the 302A package, so it isn't a stripped-down work truck. You’re getting heated seats, navigation, a big center console, and an electronic locking rear axle.
Getting the Most for Your Money
At a price point of $24,400, you are essentially getting this truck for less than half of what it cost brand new in 2018, and about a third of what a 2026 model would run you. It’s a clean, sporty-looking truck that doesn't look like it has lived a hard life.
When you're shopping under $25,000, you have to be picky. There is a lot of junk out there at this price because the demand is so high. You want to look for something that was privately owned and thoroughly checked out by a shop that knows trucks. We make sure the tires are strong, the brakes are good, and there aren't any major leaks or transmission hiccups before anything hits our lot.
If you are tired of looking at rusted-out trucks with 200,000 miles for twenty grand, this 2018 F-150 is proof that you can still find a modern, capable, and good-looking pickup without overextending yourself.
