If you are looking for the most loaded pickup truck that Ford has ever put on the road, you are looking at the F-150 Limited. We recently had a 2022 model come through the lot here in Ephrata, and it is a serious piece of machinery. This was a big refresh year for Ford, especially with those 22 inch wheels that I think are some of the best looking ones they have ever tucked under a wheel well.
Being right here in Lancaster County, we see a lot of trucks, but the Limited is a different animal. I wanted to break down five things that make this truck incredible and five things that might make you think twice before signing the dotted line.
What Makes the F-150 Limited a Total Powerhouse
The Controversial Power Boost Engine
Under the hood of this specific 2022 is the 3.5L Power Boost. Now, I know some people get defensive about hybrids in trucks, but hear me out. This is a 3.5L EcoBoost paired with a battery, and it is the king of the mountain for horsepower and torque in the F-150 lineup. We are talking 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque. That is more than the 6.2L V8 and even beats out what they were putting in the Raptor at the time. It pulls like a sports car.
A Mobile Generator for Your House
Because it has that Power Boost motor, you get the 7.2 kW Pro Power Onboard generator in the bed. It has a 240 volt plug and multiple 120 volt outlets. We saw guys down in Texas running their entire houses off these trucks when the grid went down. If you live out here in the PA countryside and lose power during a summer storm, having a truck that can keep your fridge running and lights on is a massive perk.
Smart Battery Placement
One thing I really love is that Ford tucked the hybrid battery under the rear seat. Some manufacturers stuff them in places that eat up cargo space or leave them exposed to the rocks and mud. By keeping it inside the cab, it stays away from the elements if you ever decide to take this luxury rig off the pavement.
Exotic Leather Interior
The interior is where things get wild. The leather in the Limited comes from a company called Bridge of Weir. If that name sounds familiar, it is because they provide the leather for McLaren, Aston Martin, and Range Rover. It is a quilted, plush material that feels more like a private jet than a work truck. Between the max recline seats and the massage function, it is hard to get out of the cab once you sit down.
Active Noise Cancellation
This truck actually has microphones in the ceiling that listen for engine and road noise. It then plays opposing frequencies through the speakers to cancel it out, much like high end headphones. It makes the ride incredibly quiet, which is something you usually only find in a Cadillac Escalade or a top tier Lincoln.
A Few Realities to Consider Before Buying
The Original Sticker Price
Back in 2022, the MSRP on this truck was north of $82,000. That is a lot of money for a half ton pickup. While you can find them for much less now on the used market, it is still a premium price point that puts it in the same bracket as some heavy duty trucks.
A Specific Look for a Specific Buyer
With all the chrome, the 22 inch wheels, and the high end leather, the Limited has a very specific "luxury" vibe. While it is beautiful, it does limit the buyer pool. Most guys around here want a truck they can throw a muddy chainsaw into without having a heart attack over the Bridge of Weir leather. It is a fancy truck, and that is not for everyone.
Long Term Complexity
As much as I love the technology, the Power Boost is a complex system. There is a lot going on with the twin turbos, the electric motor, and the battery systems. If you are planning on keeping a truck for 15 years, all that tech can be a little intimidating once the warranty runs out. It is a blast to drive for a few years, but long term owners should definitely consider a solid service contract.
The Hybrid Fuel Economy Myth
Even though it wears a hybrid badge, do not expect Prius numbers. You are still driving a massive, heavy pickup truck. You will likely see fuel economy in the upper teens or low 20s. If you are buying this thinking you will get 30 miles per gallon, you are going to be disappointed. The hybrid system is really there for the massive torque and the onboard generator, not for sipping fuel.
Blue Cruise vs. The Competition
The 2022 Limited comes with Ford Blue Cruise, which allows for hands free driving on certain highways. While it is cool, I honestly don't think it is quite as smooth or advanced as GM Super Cruise. For a top of the line trim, I wish Ford would have given the Limited a more "ultimate" version of the software to really set it apart from the lower trims.
Is the Limited Right for You?
At the end of the day, the F-150 Limited is a luxury vehicle that happens to have a bed. It is for the person who wants the best of everything and doesn't plan on taking it through a deep mud bog every weekend.
