If you have been looking for a heavy duty truck lately, you have probably noticed that the used market is full of 2023 and 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 Denalis. They look pretty similar from a distance, but there is actually a massive jump between these two model years. I get asked all the time by guys coming into the shop here in Ephrata which one they should pull the trigger on.
It is a fair question because you are usually looking at a price difference of about six thousand dollars between a low mileage 23 and a 24. Today, I want to break down exactly what changed and whether that extra investment is actually worth it for your driveway.
Under the Hood: More Horsepower and Torque
The biggest story for 2024 is the upgrade to the Duramax engine. Now, the 2023 was no slouch with 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. It pulls great and has plenty of get-up-and-go. But for 2024, GM decided to turn things up.
The new model puts out 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. That is a 25 horsepower jump and an extra 65 pound-feet of torque. When you are behind the wheel, you can actually feel it. It is incredible how much more responsive the 2024 feels when you step on it. Interestingly, both years still use the same 10-speed Allison transmission, so that smooth shifting experience has stayed the same.
Towing Specs and the New Max Tow Package
You would think more power means more towing, but it is actually a bit more complicated. Both the 2023 and 2024 Denalis have a conventional tow rating of 18,500 pounds. However, the 2024 actually lost a tiny bit of capacity when it comes to fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing—it dropped from 17,860 pounds down to 17,600 pounds.
This usually happens because the 2024 has more luxury tech and equipment, which adds weight to the truck itself and eats into the payload. But here is the cool part: for 2024, GM introduced an optional Max Tow Package for the 2500. This gives you 3500-style rear leaf springs and heavy-duty front shocks, basically giving you 1-ton capability in a 3/4-ton truck.
A Massive Leap in Interior Technology
If you spend a lot of time in your truck, the interior is where you are going to notice the biggest difference. To be honest, the 2023 had one of the smallest screens in the diesel world at the time. It felt a little dated compared to what Ford and Ram were doing.
The 2024 interior is an absolute game changer.
-
Massive Touchscreen: The dashboard was completely redesigned around a huge new display.
-
Smart Storage: They moved the phone charger to a slot in the center console that is honestly the best placement I have seen in any truck.
-
Rear Comfort: You now get heated rear seats in the 2500, which your passengers will definitely appreciate during those PA winters.
One thing to keep in mind is that the built-in Google Maps navigation in the 2024 requires an active OnStar subscription. You can still use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for free, but the native maps are behind a subscription now.
Exterior Styling: Clean and Compact
While the mirrors and bed steps stayed the same, the front end of the 2024 got a total makeover. The grill is different, and the headlights were upgraded to a sleeker LED design. Even the fog lights are more compact now. It looks a bit less bulky and a lot more modern than the 2023. GM also opened up a lot more wheel options for 2024, including factory 22-inch wheels if you want that extra bit of curb appeal.
Which One Should You Buy?
At the end of the day, if you are looking at spending sixty-two thousand for a 2023 or sixty-eight thousand for a 2024, the choice is pretty clear to me. With the 2024, you are getting more factory warranty, better interest rates if you are financing, and a significantly better interior.
The 2023 is a sweet truck, and if you find a total bargain on one, you will love it. But for the small difference in price, the 2024 hits it out of the park with the extra power and tech.
