Why I Drove a Thousand Miles for This GMC 2500 AT4X AEV Duramax
As a truck dealer here at Mark Martin Motors in Ephrata, PA, I have access to just about any truck made. I can go to the auction or pull from my traditional dealership sources to drive whatever I want right off my own lot. So, you might be wondering why I drove a thousand miles to get this specific truck.
The wild part is that I didn't find this at a dealer auction. I found it on Facebook Marketplace. I bought this AT4X 2500 Duramax diesel specifically because it has the AEV package, which is the most expensive build you can get on a GM 2500. Brand new, these run well over six figures. But this one had exactly what I needed for my family's off-grid adventures, and I knew I had to go get it.
Skipping the Traditional Auctions for the Perfect Build
I was looking for something very specific, and I found it on a Sunday. By Thursday, I had flown one of my guys down to Knoxville, Tennessee to hand the seller a check, and by Friday, the truck was back here at our dealership on Oregon Pike. If you live anywhere within a four-hour drive of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, you know we see our fair share of beautiful heavy-duty trucks, but I will go anywhere and everywhere to find the exact right fit.
This truck stood out because the previous owner did some really tasteful custom work. He swapped out the standard grill for a Denali Ultimate grill with a light-up GMC emblem because he didn't love the factory AT4X look. It actually has a 2025 grill with a black piece up top. It's the first AT4X I've had in with a different grill like this, and it looks incredible. He also had the entire front end wrapped in a clear bra, which is perfect for keeping the paint protected when heading into the woods.
The Unicorn: A White AT4X AEV Edition
To be honest with you, finding an AT4X AEV package in white is basically like finding a unicorn. I have never seen one go through the auction, and I'm not sure I've ever seen one out on the road. Most of them are built in darker colors like black, titanium rush, or gray. They look sweet, but for the off-road stuff I do, dark colors show every single scratch and speck of dirt. White hides all of that, and it cleans up amazingly well.
The AEV package is what really sold me. It comes with steel front and rear bumpers and upgraded steel skid plates underneath. The front bumper gives you way more ground clearance, and it's practically indestructible compared to a painted bumper that just gets chipped up. It's even winch-ready, so I could pop off the plastic cover and throw a winch on there if I wanted to.
I did make one change myself. I upgraded the factory AEV wheels to some black Hostile wheels wrapped in Nitto tires. I wanted a little bit more offset for a more aggressive stance. Thanks to the AT4X fender flares sticking out further than a standard Denali, I can run that offset without throwing as much mud and dirt down the side of the truck when I'm off-road.
Built for Off-Grid Luxury and Heavy Towing
I do a lot of off-grid camping with my wife and three kids. We take our Pause trailer, which is an off-grid camper sitting up high on air suspension, to dispersed campsites in state and national forests. We're talking gravel access roads and zero amenities.
The Multimatic DSSV shocks on this truck are an absolute game-changer, both off-road and cruising down the highway. With the off-road mode engaged, the difference in how the truck handles the rough stuff is amazing. But it also handles the heavy lifting effortlessly. When my camper is loaded up with 65 gallons of fresh water, it weighs around 9,000 pounds. Coming down steep mountain grades on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the exhaust brake and tow mode work exactly the way I want them to. In sketchy traffic situations where someone slams on the brakes, this truck handles it safely. I couldn't imagine doing that in a 1500 without an exhaust brake.
But the real secret to making these trips work is keeping my wife happy, and I have totally spoiled her at this point. I can't just put her in an LT truck with cloth seats and no lumbar support. Inside this truck, you get every luxury amenity possible. We're talking massage seats, heated and cooled seats, a full sunroof, and adaptive cruise control. It has the AEV branded floor liners and custom AEV stitching on the headliner, too.
From the luxury interior to the unmatched off-road capability, there is simply no competition for this setup in a 2500 chassis straight from the factory. Whether you are navigating traffic on the highway or hitting a remote trail, this truck handles it all.
