5 Things Nobody Tells You About the 2026 Yukon XL Denali Ultimate
Hey guys, welcome back to the Mark Martin Motors blog. If you are anywhere within a four-hour drive of our lot at 4126 Oregon Pike in Ephrata, PA, you know we pride ourselves on stocking the cleanest, most desirable trucks and SUVs around. Today, we are talking about the absolute mac daddy of our current inventory: a 2026 Yukon XL Denali Ultimate with the 3.0L Duramax diesel engine.
Now, do not get me wrong, this is probably the nicest vehicle sitting on the entire lot right now, and we sell a ton of these. But I want to be completely straight with you. There are five things about this luxury SUV that drive me nuts, things the commercials and big GM dealers will never tell you until after you sign the paperwork.
Here is a look at one of the beauties we are talking about: denali ultimate.jpg
1. The Engine Options and Fuel Expenses
This particular Yukon XL is rocking the 3.0L Duramax diesel. It gets incredible fuel mileage, easily averaging in the low to mid-20s around town and up to 30 mpg on the highway. That sounds great until you pull up to the pump and realize diesel fuel is running around $5.40 a gallon right now.
The Lack of an Economical Choice
If you decide to skip the diesel and go for the other engine option, the 6.2L V8, you are stuck paying for premium gasoline. There is really no middle ground for the Ultimate trim.
Where is the 5.3L V8?
In standard Suburbans, you can get the 5.3L V8 and run regular gas. But if you want the top-tier Denali Ultimate, you are forced into engines that cost a premium to run. When you are spending over a hundred grand, maybe fuel costs do not bother you, but I wish there was a more economical choice available for this big SUV.
2. Super Cruise Subscription Fees
Stepping inside, the interior is loaded and incredibly comfortable. One of the absolute best features is GM Super Cruise, the full self-driving tech. You can sit back on the highway, turn on your massaging seats, and let the vehicle drive itself.
The Catch After Year Three
Usually, when you buy one of these brand new, you get a three-year OnStar subscription included. But once that runs out, you have to pay a monthly fee, anywhere from $25 to $75 or more, just to keep using Super Cruise. If you are paying six figures for a vehicle, you should get a lifetime subscription. Nickel and diming owners with monthly subscription services after year three is just frustrating.
3. The 24-Inch Wheels Ruin the Ride
The 2025 redesign introduced these massive 24-inch wheels as standard on the Denali Ultimate. They look freaking awesome, but they come with a major downside.
Aesthetics vs Comfort
This SUV is equipped with magnetic ride control and air suspension, designed to make it ride like a dream. However, the low-profile tires on those 24-inch rims single-handedly take away the benefits of that advanced suspension. You are going to feel every bump on the highway. Plus, when it comes time to replace those tires, you are looking at two grand or more.
The Mark Martin Motors Solution
The good news? If you buy from us here at Mark Martin Motors, we swap out and upgrade wheel and tire packages all the time. If you hate the ride, we can easily swap them for a 22-inch or 20-inch setup that rides much smoother.

4. The Rear Entertainment Screens Are a Hassle
This is the one thing I truly despise about the big GM SUVs. The rear screens stick out a solid six inches from the back of the front seats.
The Car Seat Nightmare
If you have a tall driver in the front, the seat is going to be pushed back. If you try to put an infant car seat or even a forward-facing car seat behind them, nobody is squeezing past that screen. The screen might even rub against an infant seat. If you have a forward-facing kid getting antsy on a road trip, they are going to kick that screen or chuck a metal water bottle at it. If it cracks, you are looking at a three thousand dollar replacement bill.
Outdated Tech
On top of the physical design, the tech is frustrating. You cannot easily AirPlay or cast to them. If you try to use an HDMI cord with your tablet to stream Netflix or Prime on a road trip, you might get an out of market error, forcing you to download everything offline beforehand. In an era where everyone has a simple iPad, these expensive screens feel clunky and outdated.
5. Night Vision is Now Discontinued
This last point is something I just found out, and it is a huge bummer. In the first half of 2026, you could order a Yukon Denali Ultimate with the optional night vision package, a thermal imaging system that projects heat sources over 300 feet down the road.
A Rare Safety Feature
It is an amazing safety feature. If you are driving down the highway at night, it lights up deer on the side of the road or other vehicles' exhaust systems in black and white right on the screen in front of you. It gives you incredible peace of mind.
Scarcity in the Second Half of 2026
Going into the second half of 2026, GM has made this feature unavailable. You can no longer order it. The specific 2026 model we have sitting on our lot right now with 1,200 miles actually has this discontinued night vision package, making it incredibly rare and highly sought after.
Find Your Next Premium SUV in Ephrata
This slightly used 2026 Yukon Denali Ultimate XL in the 3.0 diesel with only 1,200 miles is currently for sale on our lot for around $102,000. A brand new one will cost you over $110,000, and you will have to wait months to get it.
